International School of Beijing (ISB) alumni met with current Grade 10 students on Tuesday to share their experiences since leaving ISB.

This was the latest ISB Alumni Pathways event harnessing the value of the school’s strong alumni network to help guide current students in their options for further education and careers. While ISB has expert University & Career Advisors preparing students for life after High School in the realms of college, bridge years, and career options, former students have also committed to giving back by taking part in events like these and through regular mentoring contact with ISB students.

Tina Huang was one of the alumni taking part on Tuesday. “I wish I had someone telling me these things when I was in High School,” said Tina, ISB Class of 2013 and a YouTuber with millions of subscribers. “I didn’t know what was out there in the world, so I’m hopefully able to help people understand a little bit more what it is they want to be doing, what is out there, and help guide them in the direction they would like to go.”

The nine alumni mentors who met with students virtually and in person on Tuesday represented different graduating years, industries, and backgrounds including:

  • Art and design
  • Biotech research and development
  • Business management and entrepreneurship
  • Economics and finance
  • Counseling and mental health
  • Engineering and technology
  • Law enforcement and legal services
  • Medicine and health

It was an invaluable opportunity for students to hear from their predecessors. Some of the alumni are in leadership positions in their industries, some are still in university. No matter where they are in life, they had one thing in common – excellent preparation at ISB!

For instance, Kevin Yang, ISB Class of 2010 and principal product manager at educational technology company Duolingo, spoke about the head start he had at college after studying at ISB. He said the lab work and Theory of Knowledge classes put him ahead of many of his peers at college who had not had such experiences at school.

ISB students are already looking forward to future Pathways events and are keen to hear from any more alumni interested in providing mentoring.

Thank you to Tuesday's alumni panelists! They were: Lea Bochtler, Class of 2018; Stephanie Du, Class of 2017; Tina Huang, Class of 2013; Nicole Ng, Class of 2014; Eric Wang, Class of 2011; Amelie Wen Zhao, Class of 2010; Lalith Wijedoru, Class of 1997; Kevin Yang, Class of 2010; Rovan Yu, Class of 2009.
