A group of entrepreneurial High School students have brought hands-on learning – and a splash of healthy flavor – to Early Years classes at the International School of Beijing (ISB).
As part of their student-led business initiative, Dragon Juice, the young entrepreneurs recently designed and led lessons for Early Years students, introducing them to fruit, healthy choices, and the fun of creating something together.
Learning by doing, across divisions
Dragon Juice is an interdisciplinary project that has quickly become a standout example of authentic learning at ISB since its establishment several months ago. It’s a good example of ISB teaching practical, real-world skills that will be useful long after graduation.
“Dragon Juice has truly been a win-win for all involved. It’s strengthening community, amplifying school spirit, and inspiring innovative learning, all while encouraging healthy, positive contributions,” according to Dan Russell, the teacher supervising the project.
While making and sharing fresh fruit juices is at its core, Dragon Juice teaches High School students far more than recipes. Participants are gaining experience in business operations, marketing and communications, health and wellness, research skills, and education – all while building meaningful connections across divisions.
A true community project, Dragon Juice is entirely funded by a grant from ISB’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA). The PTA provides financial support for initiatives that foster community spirit, promote enthusiasm for learning, and encourage positive contributions within ISB. Any community member planning an event or initiative may apply for funding.
Safety, sustainability, responsibility
Before any juicing began, students completed a food safety course, earning certification to safely handle and prepare food. “They learned how to safely process food, which sets a strong foundation for everything that comes next,” explained Mr. Russell.
Although the group has not officially begun selling their juices, they are preparing for future opportunities at major school events. They are also thinking sustainably – composting leftover pulp and even growing their own produce, such as celery, to understand the full cycle of food.
All funds raised in the future will go directly back into supporting and expanding the project.
“Dragon Juice bridges age groups,” said Hannah W, one of the Grade 10 students who taught the Early Years classes. “Our guiding of younger peers creates a cycle of care and mentorship, reinforcing that learning at ISB is not confined to classrooms or grades – it’s community-driven and values-led. That combination of agency, well-being, and human connection makes Dragon Juice a strong example of purposeful and compassionate learning in action.”
ISB is an extraordinary school, made so by a tradition of educational excellence spanning 45 years. Establishing, nurturing, and growing such an exceptional learning community has been and remains intentional; we work hard to build strong relationships so our learning is at its best.
