The Government Affairs Student Ambassadors club at the International School of Beijing (ISB) represents a unique and impactful student-led initiative dedicated to fostering meaningful connections between the school and our local community. Founded by four students last school year, the club has grown into a vibrant platform where leadership, cultural exchange, and community service intersect.
The GA Student Ambassadors began with a clear mission: to empower students to engage actively with local authorities, community members, and school events, enhancing ISB’s reputation as an educational leader and nurturing student leaders. The students crafted the club’s vision from scratch, from undergoing leadership training to organizing mock tours to prepare for their ambassadorial roles. This foundation set the tone for a high-expectation, high-support environment where students could develop skills in public speaking, leadership, and community engagement.
Over the past two years, the GA Student Ambassadors have showcased ISB to guests and local community members through over 25 events. Their activities span a wide range of engagements, including:
- Hosting government delegation visits and local school exchanges
- Supporting local community and school initiatives, such as sustainability initiatives like tree planting
- Representing ISB at major school functions including the Global University Fair, Open House, and the ISB-hosted ELLSA Conference
- Facilitating peer to peer cultural exchange events
These efforts have not only strengthened ISB’s ties with local authorities and the community but also provided students with practical experience in diplomacy, event management, and social responsibility. The program emphasizes personal growth alongside community service. Students from diverse backgrounds have had improvements in bilingual public speaking, leadership skills, and cultural understanding.
The club offers leadership training, storytelling workshops, and more to equip students with the skills needed to excel as ambassadors. In April, the GA Student Ambassadors club was awarded the Association of China and Mongolia International Schools (ACAMIS) Service Learning Grant, which the students applied for. This grant will allow the club to expand its reach and deepen its impact within and beyond the school community, including allowing the students to engage in more training workshops and community service activities.
The GA Student Ambassadors at ISB represent a great example of student empowerment and community engagement. Through their diverse activities, leadership development, and the support of the ACAMIS grant, they are making a lasting impact on both the school and local community.
ISB is an extraordinary school, made so by a tradition of educational excellence spanning 40 years. Establishing, nurturing, and growing such an exceptional learning community has been and remains intentional; we work hard to build strong relationships so our learning is at its best.
