At the International School of Beijing (ISB), our co-curricular performing arts complements our curriculum, by offering technical skill development, the opportunity to perform in groups and the exploration of styles and genres not covered in curricular classes. Our co-curricular performing arts activities include choirs, dance, jazz bands, string ensembles, and theatrical productions (musicals, dramas and one-act plays).

Last week, ISB highlighted our performing arts in two big ways. We were excited to welcome six Asia Pacific Activities Conference (APAC) schools to ISB for the 2024 APAC Choir Festival! Around 100 students from the International School of Beijing, American International School of Guangzhou, Canadian Academy of Kobe, Shanghai American School Pudong, Shanghai America School Puxi, and Seoul Foreign School worked collaboratively for three days under the guidance of conductor Jiajing Lai, from the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Beijing. The festival culminated with a spectacular concert on Saturday afternoon.

Under the expert direction of our High School (HS) Theater Teacher, Kiki Davenport, our HS Production, A Wrinkle in Time, was also brought to life last week. Based on the award-winning young adult novel, our students told a story of young characters maturing into adolescents, embarking on a journey through space and time, as they consider light and darkness, good and evil, and the importance of acting with purpose and leadership.

These two amazing performances were enjoyed by current ISB community members, but also prospective families, as our Middle School (MS)/HS Fall Open House gave folks the opportunity to catch the shows and see the incredible hard work ISB students and staff have put in.

At ISB, our students are empowered with purpose and compassion, and our performing arts program is a great example of this, as it engages the intellectual, physical and emotional aspects of each student to promote creativity, self-expression, collaboration, multicultural awareness, interdisciplinary student and critical thinking - essential skills that will prepare our students for the future.

For ISB community members who may have missed these performances, not to worry, as you still have the opportunity to reserve tickets for our ES Musical – Frozen. Click here to reserve your tickets.

ISB is an extraordinary school, made so by a tradition of educational excellence spanning 40 years. Establishing, nurturing, and growing such an exceptional learning community has been and remains intentional; we work hard to build strong relationships so our learning is at its best.
