To provide International School of Beijing (ISB) students with unique opportunities to understand the balance between people and planet, ISB is pleased to announce that a rooftop garden was recently added to our world-class facilities!

School gardens impact students when it comes to service and experiential learning, sustainable practices, hands-on learning, and the development of environmental stewardship. Gardens also support units related to global citizenship, environmental science, and food waste, and more. The garden provides ISB students with the opportunity to plant and care for seasonal vegetables, enjoy time outdoors, and build community.

Completed in August 2022, our rooftop garden is open to all grade levels and aids in ISB’s continuing quest to provide students with challenging and joyful learning opportunities and the freedom to explore alongside nature. The completion of this project aligns with ISB’s Sustainability Action Plan, as it supports all four main branches of People, Planet, Purpose and Campus.

ISB faculty and staff alike have been excitedly visiting and working in our newly inaugurated rooftop garden

The living laboratory was collaboratively designed by ISB Sustainability Manager, Paola Alonso, and High School students Nicole S, Ray F, Austin H, Kamsen Y, May T, and Tom C. The students led design by measuring, engineering, and personalizing the blueprints. Ultimately, these designs were transformed into reality by the hard-working ISB Facilities Department team members. Thank you to all involved who helped bring this project to fruition!

ISB is an extraordinary school, made so by a tradition of educational excellence spanning 40 years. Establishing, nurturing, and growing such an exceptional learning community has been and remains intentional; we work hard to build strong relationships so our learning is at its best.
