The International School of Beijing’s (ISB) youngest students have started cooking up a storm in a special kitchen within the school’s Early Years Learning Community (EYLC).
The EYLC is among four new facilities at ISB designed to serve different age groups. Like all the spaces in the EYLC, the Chefs’ Kitchen is tailored for Early Years 3 (EY3), Early Years 4 (EY4), and Kindergarten students. Check out these little cooks in their child-sized surroundings!
EY4 had a safety orientation in the Chefs’ Kitchen on Wednesday and made pumpkin soup on Thursday. In an example of collaboration across ISB, there is a plan for Middle School film students to make safety videos to screen for future users of the EYLC Chefs’ Kitchen.
Teachers will align instruction in the Chefs’ Kitchen with students’ learning in the classroom. Through hands-on experiences, students are able to engage with materials, explore, and create. The soup cooks have been learning about autumn vegetables and concepts of change. In the kitchen, they were challenged to work together, to discuss characteristics, and to make best use of kitchen utensils to develop a tasty end product. Yum!
