ISB students’ IB exam results soar above global average

By Nick Yates, ISB Communications

International School of Beijing (ISB) students are celebrating another year of excellent results in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, with an average score of 36 – six points higher than the typical global average.

ISB students’ IB average has been at 35 points or above since 2009. Demonstrating consistent excellence, their average score has now been five to seven points above the global average for over a decade. Our students achieved a pass rate of 96 percent in the latest round of IB exams. One ISB student was even awarded the maximum 45 points.

With over 50 countries represented in the student body and ISB offering a leading Chinese language program in international schools, it’s perhaps not surprising that 35 percent of the IB Diplomas awarded to ISB students were bilingual diplomas. Top universities worldwide that accepted ISB students for enrollment in 2018-2019 included: Brown University, California Institute of the Arts, Colorado School of Mines, Columbia University, United States Naval Academy, McGill University, Durham University, London School of Economics, University of Cambridge, University of Leicester Medical School, Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, University of Hong Kong, and Seoul National University.

ISB’s academic program in the High School balances the breadth of the IB Diploma Programme with a choice of courses tailored to individual student interests. Head of School Patrick Hurworth said, “For many of our students in the High School, the IB Diploma Programme offers the most appropriate level of challenge as they prepare to move onto colleges and universities around the world.

“There’s strong belief here and elsewhere that it’s the most challenging college preparatory program in the world. That our students have performed as well as they have, once again, is a credit to their diligence, and the expertise and care of their teachers and counselors.

“Year after year, our students achieve impressive results that compare very favorably with highly academically selective schools in Beijing, China, Asia, and around the world. For their high degree of commitment and accomplishments, I offer my congratulations to all those students who participated in the full IB Diploma Programme.”

While applauding the students, Mr. Hurworth thanked High School Principal David Munro, High School Assistant Principal Lorraine Wicks, IB Curriculum Coordinator Belinda McRoberts, and all High School counselors and teachers for their work preparing the students for exams.

ISB is an extraordinary school, made so by a tradition of educational excellence spanning 40 years. Establishing, nurturing, and growing such an exceptional learning community has been and remains intentional; we work hard to build strong relationships so our learning is at its best.
