This article is part of a series highlighting ISB’s history of excellence. The school has been providing challenging and joyful learning since 1980. Flashback Friday profiles some of the traditions and memorable moments that ISB continues to build upon today.
The International School of Beijing’s (ISB) involvement with Model United Nations (MUN) goes back decades. It sees students role-play delegates from various countries and debate solutions to real-world problems with peers from around the world. This academic simulation of one of the world’s most important diplomatic organizations develops skills including critical thinking, public speaking, collaboration, and leadership.
ISB also has Middle School (MS) and Elementary School (ES) MUN clubs, so many more generations will have formative experiences like this year’s BEIMUN. Just a couple of weeks ago, our MS MUN club attended DIMUN at Dulwich College Beijing. Additionally, in January, High School students travelled to The Hague for the THIMUN Conference. ISB enthusiastically represented countries addressing global issues through lobbying, resolution writing, and debate at these two conferences.
The pictured “MUN wall of fame” at ISB charts how MUN students travel far and wide for events.
Besides attending THIMUN and DIMUN, ISB also hosts BEIMUN every year. The Beijing MUN (BEIMUN) conference at ISB was founded in 1993 and is now one of the largest conferences in Asia. This year marks the 31st BEIMUN conference. It is entirely student-led and is one of the most highly regarded high-school MUN conferences globally.

"The Model United Nations program in Beijing is an extension of The Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN). As an affiliate, BEIMUN seeks to reflect the ideas and principles of a peaceful post-Cold War world. It is our hope that BEIMUN will continue to act as another regional center of THIMUN conference affiliates helping to revitalize the original ideals of the United Nations." - Irwin Stein, Founder of BEIMUN, January 1993.
“BEIMUN has taught me to recognize that there is a diversity of opinion and culture among global citizens. It takes courage to voice your opinion, and it is impressive that BEIMUN helps students cultivate communication and cooperation skills and my confidence. I look forward to BEIMUN every year.” - Vincent W, BEIMUN Delegate, March 2024.

BEIMUN is just one of the ways ISB students can sample real world experiences, while also taking the knowledge learned to create a positive social impact. Not only did students develop their critical thinking and public speaking skills on important global issues, but this conference also allowed delegates from around the world to work together and develop friendships. Congrats to all our Dragons, who demonstrated exceptional commitment and professionalism throughout the event. To hear more from the delegates, check out the video below.
ISB is an extraordinary school, made so by a tradition of educational excellence spanning 40 years. Establishing, nurturing, and growing such an exceptional learning community has been and remains intentional; we work hard to build strong relationships so our learning is at its best.
