The orchard is more than a new green space. It is a student-envisioned project rooted in long-term thinking, environmental stewardship, and Dragon Spirit. Led by students and supported by the wider ISB community, the orchard offers a place where learning can move beyond the classroom and into a living environment shaped by care, patience, and shared responsibility. At the heart of the initiative is a simple but powerful idea: students can create something meaningful today that will continue to grow for future generations of Dragons. #### **A student-led vision** The ISB Orchard began as a vision for a community space where students could connect with nature, contribute to campus sustainability, and build a lasting legacy. Grade 12 student **Andrew G** played a leading role in shaping the project, alongside members of **Green Impact**, ISB’s student-led sustainability club, and student representatives from across grade levels. Together, students helped bring the idea to life through planning, planting, and caring for the trees. For Andrew, the orchard represents a different kind of learning experience: one that encourages students to slow down, step outside, and see the value of long-term care. “The ISB orchard began with a simple idea: amid a modern culture of technology addiction and instant gratification, I wanted to create a place where students could get their hands in the dirt, reconnect with nature, and contribute to something that would grow beyond their own time at ISB,” he explained. “This orchard is about hands-on stewardship of our environment and about strengthening class identity along the way. Planting these trees reminds us that meaningful change often takes patience and shared effort. I hope it becomes a space where students can learn, reflect, practice mindfulness, and feel proud of the legacy they are helping to build.” The orchard includes trees connected to different student cohorts, creating a living symbol of class identity and continuity. A pear tree represents the Class of 2027, a peach tree represents the Class of 2028, and a pomegranate tree represents the Class of 2029. A walnut tree, planned for November 2026, will represent ISB alumni. As these trees grow, they will stand as a reminder of the students who helped create the space and the future Dragons who will learn, gather, and reflect there. #### **Sustainability in action** The ISB Orchard builds on the success of the rooftop garden, extending ISB’s commitment to hands-on environmental learning into a more accessible, ground-level space. All trees planted in the orchard are species suited to Beijing’s climate, supporting local biodiversity while helping conserve water and resources. The space is designed as a living educational model, giving students opportunities to explore ecosystems, sustainability, food growing, environmental protection, and the responsibility that comes with caring for living things. It also reflects the work of Green Impact, which has led hands-on sustainability projects across campus for several years. Through projects like the orchard, students develop advocacy, collaboration, and leadership skills while learning how to turn ideas into practical action. #### **A living classroom for the ISB community** The orchard will serve as a living classroom for the entire ISB community. Students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 will be able to use the space for lessons, mentoring, wellness activities, reading groups, and interdisciplinary learning. Examples of possible learning connections include Kindergarten units such as “Watch It Grow,” Middle School humanities lessons on the Sustainable Development Goals, Theory of Knowledge in High School, AP Chinese, mentoring classes, and learning experiences connected to nature and well-being. The orchard also offers opportunities to engage with Chinese culture through its design, stories, and architecture. It is a space where students can explore literature, culture, sustainability, and community connection in ways that feel tangible and memorable. According to ISB Head of School Trevor Laboski, “The ISB Orchard is a powerful example of what happens when students are empowered to lead with purpose. This project brings together sustainability, culture, learning, and community in a way that reflects the very best of ISB. It will serve not only as a living classroom, but also as a lasting reminder that student ideas can shape our campus and strengthen Dragon Spirit for generations to come.” #### **Community support and shared generosity** The ISB Orchard was made possible through support from across the school community. Funding came from the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), the Student Empowerment Fund (SEF), and additional school support. The Student Empowerment Fund exists to support student-proposed projects aligned with ISB’s Mission and Vision, with a focus on service learning, sustainability, creative learning, and entrepreneurship. Its support for the orchard reflects the purpose of the fund: empowering students to turn ideas into action and make service an increasing part of their ISB experience. The PTA also contributed to the project as part of its ongoing commitment to strengthening community life and supporting meaningful opportunities for students. Every contribution helped bring this student-led vision to life. #### **A space to grow together** The official opening of the ISB Orchard marks the beginning of a new chapter for sustainability and outdoor learning at ISB. As a peaceful space for reflection, connection, and learning, the orchard invites students and community members to step outside, breathe, observe, and take part in the slow and rewarding process of watching something grow. It is a place for lessons and gatherings, but also for patience, mindfulness, and belonging. Most importantly, it is a reminder of what students can achieve when they are empowered to lead with purpose, compassion, and care for the world around them.
