The International School of Beijing’s (ISB) Chinese-language students have been enjoying themselves and excelling through competitions and ISB’s first Chinese Panda Reading Week to promote literacy.
The latest ISB student to prove herself against peers from around the world in a Chinese competition is Grade 11’s Jasmine Z. She won an outstanding writer award in the Global Chinese Writing Competition for Young Writers.
Jasmine said she entered the award because of her passion for writing following inspiration from her teachers as well as other people around her in the ISB community.
“The competition has reaffirmed my dedication and effort to writing,” she said. “This competition will be a stepping-stone for me to advance my writing career in the future.”
An activity for Chinese Panda Reading Week
ISB runs one of the region’s leading Chinese and dual language programs in an international school. ISB’s Chinese Language and Culture Center was established in 2018 to further strengthen the school’s teaching of Chinese in terms of both language and cultural connections.
ISB’s Confucian scholars consistently achieve in competitions like this. As a school, ISB won the Outstanding Participation Award in the Mainland China region in the first Chinese Language Festival last year. More than 90 ISB students took part, from Elementary School to High School, with 55 of them winning awards in various categories.
With ISB students encouraged to find their passions and participate in competitions and events outside of school, there have been plenty more entries from ISB to this year’s Chinese Language Festival. We can expect more ISB wins when the results are announced in June.
ISB Chinese teachers held their first Chinese Panda Reading Week from April 18 to 22. In the spirit of World Book and Copyright Day, the week held activities to celebrate bilingual and bicultural talent in all grades. Students enjoyed a podcast, reading challenge, a visiting author seminar, and more.
